Kitomba, along with HITO and NZARH, are incredibly proud to have brought The Industry Awards to the New Zealand hair, beauty and barbering industries for the ninth time!
The Industry Awards were created to recognise the best business, training and creative talent and the 2018 awards highlighted exceptional creativity, dedication and skills.
We chatted to some of the 2018 winners to ask them about their experience, success, and business, and gain some advice for those planning to enter next year.
Industry Trainer of the Year, Natasha Bird
“This is by far the best thing I’ve ever won, because it’s about giving back – I love it. Someone took the time and effort into training me so I believe it’s important to give back to the industry and training is one way of doing that. You’re helping to shape the lives of future hairdressers which is amazing.”
Editorial Stylist of the Year, Natasha King
“Put it this way, 4 years ago nobody knew my name. That’s how much I have grown through competitions”. And for those considering entering, she says “just do it!!”.
New Zealand Hair Salon of the Year, Fox Hair Blonde Bar
Owner Dave Morph said “the format of the New Zealand Hair Salon of the Year award is perfect as it looks at all the areas that need to be healthy in order for your business to succeed. So it’s the perfect opportunity to have a really in depth look at your business. We got so much out of it and it’s such a great tool and health check.”
New Zealand Beauty Salon of the Year, FaceTime Skin Clinic
Michael and Melissa Gladding, owners of FaceTime Skin Clinic, gave the following advice to those entering next year: “It’s hard work, it does take effort and it’s not a quick process. We personally put a lot of time and thought into our entry, and particularly how we would present it. The biggest thing is commitment because we can all make a start but what it’s really about is finishing it. Having entered has now given us the confidence and encouragement to do it again, so we really recommend doing it.”
Apprentice of the Year, Jade Scott – Vivo Hair & Beauty
“I’m absolutely stoked! It was such an honour to be acknowledged amongst the industry’s top artists, stylists and business people.” For her career she believes “being the 2018 Apprentice of the Year means my platform has widened to make a difference in our industry and it really excites me to pass on all the tools I’ve been given to other apprentices so they too can experience the success I’ve been honoured with.”
Sustainable Salon of the Year, Scout
Owner of Scout, Annabel Kinley, said: “Winning Sustainable Salon of the Year has spurred me on, I’ve spent a lot of time in the last few weeks thinking about what we work on next and what that looks like. I’m so excited to see what the year brings.”
